THESE ARE MID 70'S STERLINGS. A STERLING IS WHAT'S KNOWN AS A "KIT CAR"...MEANING IT'S A COMPLETE NEW BODY BUILT ONTO AN EXISTING CHASSI, USUALLY A VOLKSWAGON.

I DISCOVERED THESE TWO CARS SITTING IN A WEED GROWN LOT HIDDEN AMONGST A BUNCH OF OTHER OLD CARS IN AN INDUSTRIAL AREA OF SOUTH TUCSON.  THEY HAD BEEN SITTING A VERY LONG TIME AND THE PACK RATS HAD DESTROYED THE WIRING AND RUBBER. THERE WERE EVEN CACTUSES GROWING INSIDE ONE OF THEM AND THEY GROW SLOW.

THE DASH TAKES SHAPE.                                                                     THE MOTOR IS STARTING TO LOOK GOOD.
THAT'S MY RC RACE BOAT THAT IT'S
LEANING AGAINST.


OK, NOW TO PUT THE TAIL BACK ON AND THEN MOVE ON TO THE THE BRAKES.....OR MAYBE THE CHASSI...
OR MAYBE THE INTERIOR....OR MAYBE ?



THE FIRST PHOTO SHOW ONE OF THE PNEUMATIC RAMS WITH ASSORTED PLUMBING. THE SECOND PHOTO IS THE AIR TOGGLE SWITCH USED FOR VENTING OFF THE PRESSURE STORED IN THE RAMS IN CASE OF A SYSTEMS FAILURE. THIS SWITCH USES NO ELECTRONICS AND IS 100% MECHANICAL. THE THIRD PHOTO SHOWS THE WIRED AIR CONTROL ASSEMBLY  READY TO BE INSTALLED IN THE CAR.


 

THIS PHOTO IS A CLOSE UP OF THE AIR CONTROL ASSEMBLY. IT USES A COMMON INLET FOR AIR PRESSURE SUPPLIED BY A PVC STORAGE TANK. THE TANK CAN BE PRESSURIZED FROM MY HOME AIR COMPRESSORS OR FROM AN ON-BOARD AIR COMPRESSOR. THE ON-BOARD AIR COMPRESSOR IS AN AIR SUSPENSION TYPE CAPABLE OF SUPPLYING 160 PSI.
THERE ARE FOUR AIR CONTROL SOLENOIDS WIRED INTO A DPDT SPRING LOADED CENTER OFF TOGGLE SWITCH. "UP" ON THE TOGGLE ACTIVATES TWO SOLENOIDS AND "DOWN"  ACTIVATES THE OTHER TWO.
ONE SOLENOID IN EACH SERIES CONTROLS THE  HIGH PRESSURE AIR FOR THAT ACTION. (UP OR DOWN) THE SECOND SOLENOID IN THE SERIES VENTS THE HIGH PRESSURE AIR FROM THE PREVIOUS ACTION.
"UP" ON THE SWITCH SUPPLIES AIR PRESSURE TO THE "UP" SIDE OF THE PNEUMATIC RAMS BUT ALSO VENTS THE AIR PRESSURE FROM THE "DOWN" SIDE.
THE "DOWN" VENT SOLENOID HAS A SMALL VALVE ATTACHED TO CONTROL HOW FAST THE AIR VENTS OUT. THIS CONTROLS HOW FAST THE CANOPY SLAMS SHUT.


THE DASH IS STARTING TO GO TOGETHER. IT HAS FULL INSTRUMENTATION COMPRISED OF A VOLTMETER, TACH, SPEEDO, OIL TEMP, WATER TEMP, OIL PRESSURE, VACUUM AND FUEL GAUAGE. ALL SWITCES ARE HEAVY DUTY TOGGLES WITH AIRCRAFT STYLE  SAFETY COVERS OVER THE SENSITIVE ONES SUCH AS THE COWL LIFT CONTROLS.

WOW! IT DID ALL FIT IN THERE. THERE'S ALSO 1000 WATTS OF PIONEER STEREO DRIVING TWO TEN INCH WOOFERS AND FOUR SIX INCH THREE WAYS. A PIONEER BODY SONIC SYSTEM IS READY TO BE INSTALLED IN THE SEATS. THAT WILL  BE BASE THAT YOU CAN REALLY FEEL!


THE REAR LOUVERS HAVE AN OIL COOLER MOUNTED ON THE INSIDE WITH TWO COOLING FANS. THE COOLER IS CONNECTED TO THE OILING SYSTEM THROUGH A THERMOSTAT TO PREVENT OVER COOLING. EVENTUALLY, ALL OF THE HOSES WILL BE STAINLESS BRAIDED. THE TOP SIDE AIR INTAKE SCOOPS WILL BE FUNCTIONAL WITH DUCT WORK ROUTED UNDER THE LOUVERS. . DUAL OIL FILTERS WITH LARGE ATTACHED MAGNETS WILL KEEP THE OIL CLEAN. THE RED BOX IN THE CENTER IS A DELTA CAPACITIVE DISCHARGE IGNITION UNIT FIRING THROUGH AN ACCEL SUPER COIL. THE PLUG WIRES ARE 8MM SOLID COPPER CORE AND THE DISTRIBUTOR IS A MALLORY CENTRIFIGUAL DUAL POINT SYSTEM.



THE SUNROOF IS READY TO INSTALL AND THE TEAR DROP HOOD SCOOP IS FUNCTIONAL. THE SIDE SLOTS ALLOW THE HOT AIR FROM THE RADIATIOR TO PERCOLATE OUT AND THE FRONT INTAKES (DIFFICULT TO SEE IN THIS PHOTO) ARE DUCTED DOWN INTO THE FRONT OF THE RADIATIOR FOR EXTRA AIR FLOW. THE VERY DARK HEADLIGHT COVERS WILL BE REPLACED WITH LIGHTER TINTED ONES.

NUMBER ONE HAS A FORD V6 MOTOR WHICH RAN AFTER SOME SEMI MAJOR WORK. THE WATER PUMP WAS SEIZED UP AND OF COURSE, THE WIRING AND HOSES WERE GONE BUT IT SOUNDS NICE NOW.
NUMBER TWO HAS A DUAL CARB VW MOTOR AND WHILE NOT YET RUNNING, IS NOT SEIZED UP.
I EXPECT IT TO RUN WELL TOO.

NUMBER ONE WITH THE FORD V6 WILL BE TOTALLY RESTORED AND WILL BE MINE. NUMBER
TWO WILL BE PARTIALLY RESTORED AND SOLD.
I HAVE ALREADY CLEANED OUT NUMBER ONE AND RAN NEW WIRING. I BUILT A NEW DASH FOR IT
AND MADE THE MOTOR SOUND AND LOOK VERY NICE. IT STILL HAS A LONG WAY TO GO AND I
WILL ADD NEW PHOTO'S IN EACH STAGE OF THE RESTORATION.
NO, I AM NOT GOING THROUGH A SECOND CHILDHOOD SINCE I'VE NEVER FINISHED THE FIRST ONE.
